    I have only watched attempt #12, but here is what I see in your approach and take-off, take it for what it’s worth. If you are committed to launching off of one foot, there are some things you should take into account.

    Speed: It is harder for you to convert lots of approach speed (forward) into vertical lift (up) so make your approach dribble/run a little slower.

    Rise: You are trying to rise and from a one-foot take-off, you will need to allow your body to actually peak as efficiently as possible and not cheat yourself out of those precious inches you need to clear the front of the rim….so jump *further* away from the rim. In fact, practice your slower approach and further launch point without a ball in hand.

    Practice: Approach slowly, shorten your stride and jump further back than you think you should. Aim to hit the base of your wrist on the very front of the rim. Your launch foot should be pointed at the very-front part of the rim. When you incorporate the ball into the equation, make use of the added weight by swinging the ball down across your left hip when you plant your left foot for take-off and swing it up with you as you explode out of your jump….creating some additional upward momentum. Don’t be afraid to use two-hands as you really don’t need that much more lift to complete the dunk with two-hands provided you are holding nothing but the bottom of the ball.

    Hey Jason, great work. Looks like you’re almost there, I’m really pulling for you. Seeing as you seem like such a nice guy, I’ll let you in on a little training secret to help those calves of yours give you the extra couple of inches you need.     You’re close there man. As part of your training have you tried to dunk a full size ball on a lower rim, say 9 1/2 feet? Dunking isn’t just the jump, you need to train the hand too.

    Great attempt #12! Almost there. Consider putting “stickum” on your hands to grip the ball a little more. Its just like the stuff football receivers use. You get them at any sports retailer like Sports Authority. Good luck! Comment on your approach, if you use one hand, you need a little more speed. If you use two hands, I agree with the previous post of less running speed. If you try to jump off 2 feet with just a double dribble 2 step to the goal and take off with both hands on the ball and then stay with just the 1 hand at the peak of your jump and dunk, I believe will give you a better chance. Just saying…

    You’re definitely going to make it before your birthday. However, if it’s getting close, you should try a self lob off the bounce. Once you get the pass correct, you’ll definitely put it down. It sounds like you’d need more coordination to do it, but in actuality, it’s a bit easier because you don’t have to worry about the ball until you’re in the air. That’s how I caught my first dunk.

    I’ve recently turned 30 (now 31) and have managed to barely dunk again. I have the advantage of being taller with longer arms and palming the basketball – the disadvantage of having no leaping/quickness ability. This attempt (#12) was much closer than the ones on ESPN.

    Practicing on a slightly lower net is very important – dunking is actually hard to do when you barely get high enough (which is the best you can hope for for a while). Pros make it look easy because they have done it a million times. Spectacular/emphatic dunking requires getting the full wrist or more above the rim. If you can get your thumb over the rim, that should be enough for basic dunking.

    I settle for soft dunks – that is, I can get the ball over the rim in my hand, and push it down slightly. Think of WNBA dunks – that’s the first realistic goal.

    Hey, keep in mind that over 30 you need much more warm up time. I can only just grab the rim when I get to the gym but after a run or to I can dunk easily. That’s at 5′9.

The Rundown
So, this is the deal. I turn 30 on November 22 of this year, and have come to the conclusion that the most logical manner in which to preserve my youthful spirit is to attempt to directly counteract the aging process. The obvious solution: to accomplish a physical feat that I’ve never before believed myself capable. After the contemplation of a host of potential tasks, I have settled on the one true test of my physical acumen… to dunk a basketball. Seeing as I hung up my athletic sneakers when I was 20 and vowed never again to break a sweat, it has become painfully obvious that I have a long, arduous journey ahead of me. I am on a workout regiment daily from Monday-Friday, rest on Saturday, naturally, and I video a “dunk attempt” every Sunday. So that's it... That's the whole shtick... I hope you enjoy tracking my progress, or lack thereof, from day to day, and from week to week. In the end, I'm quite certain that you'll be forever grateful for the opportunity to witness an aging man's ability to defy all odds, to break laws of nature and physics in this, his Quest to reclaim his youth before it is too late...
